The Middlebury football team held Amherst scoreless for three quarters of action, en route to a 21-7 season-opening victory on Youngman Field.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panther defense came out strong, forcing a three-and-out on the Mammoths' initial drive of the game.
- Middlebury's Cole Kennon tossed the ball to Patrick Jamin for a 53-yard scoring strike, before Zach Levy split the uprights for an early 7-0 edge.
- On their next possession, the Panthers marched down the field from their own 40, before Alex Maldjian scored on a three-yard rush up the middle. Levy's kick was good to put Middlebury up 14-0 with 6:50 remaining in the opening quarter.
- The Panthers took over at midfield at the end of the stanza. Kennon connected with Michael Yamin for a 16-yard first-down reception, before a 15-yard rush by Maldjian put Middlebury on the edge of the red zone. Three plays later, Ollie Orvis snuck into the endzone and another kick by Levy made it 21-0.
- Amherst looked to get on the board early in the third quarter, making its way down to the Panther 22-yard line. Finn Muldoon broke up a pass on third-and-13 before Dave Filias and Tomas Kenary wrapped up quarterback Jack Cox to take over on downs.
- With just under eight minutes left in the stanza, the Mammoths tried to string a few plays together, but Sam Wilson intercepted a pass at the three-yard line to deny Amherst of a score.
- Beginning at their own 20-yard line with 11:39 to go in the game, the Mammoths marched their way down the field. Brendan Easter broke up a pass on third-and-three, before a sack by Kenary turned Amherst over on downs.
- With just under two minutes to go, the Mammoths finally broke through. John Collier found Cam Jones for a four-yard scoring strike, before Matthew Kelley split the uprights for the 21-7 final score.
NOTES
- Filias (3.5) and Kenary (4.5) each tallied career-high sack totals during the win, helping Middlebury set a school record for most sacks in a game (nine). The previous mark of eight was achieved twice, most recently in 2004.
- John McCool led all players with a career-best 10 tackles (four solo).
- Orvis' touchdown was the first in his career.
- Doug Mandigo is now 1-0 in his head coaching career.
- Today marked the 48th game between Middlebury and Amherst in a series that dates back to 1908. The Mammoths own a slight edge (26-22-1) in the series, but the Panthers are 5-2 over the last seven meetings.
Middlebury hits the road next weekend, traveling to Wesleyan on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
