Football Edged By Wesleyan 24-21 In Back-And-Forth Battle

The Middlebury football team battled Wesleyan to the very end, but came up short 24-21 in a tightly contested NESCAC bout.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals came out strong, scoring on the first possession of the game. Quarterback Niko Candido found Liam Kennedy for a 34-yard strike and Daniel Yoon split the uprights to give Wesleyan a 7-0 early edge.
  • The Panthers answered on their second possession, starting at their own 29-yard line. Middlebury made its way down the field before a short touchdown rush by Ollie Orvis and an extra point from Zach Levy knotted the game at 7-7.
  • On the first play of the second quarter, Rocco Stola intercepted a pass by Candido to start the action. The Cardinals returned the favor on the next play when Wesley Abraham responded with a pick-six. Yoon's extra point was good, giving Wesleyan a 14-7 lead.
  • With 3:01 left in the half, Yoon booted an 18-yard field goal through the uprights to increase the Cardinal advantage to 17-7 at the break.
  • With just a few minutes expired in the third stanza, Middlebury took over at its own 35-yard line, marching down the field for an eight-minute scoring drive. The Panthers kept the ball on the ground, with Orvis, Kennon and Isaiah Izzo Lizardi accounting for all of the yardage. Orvis barreled his way into the endzone for a three-yard strike, and Levy tallied the extra point to make it 17-14 with one quarter to go.
  • Wesleyan's Candido connected with Thomas Elkhoury for a 33-yard touchdown pass on the first possession of the final quarter. Yoon's kick was good, giving the Cardinals a 10-point advantage (24-14).
  • The teams traded quick possessions before Middlebury answered. Kennon started the drive with a 33-yard laser to Donovan Wood, before Patrick Jamin caught an 11-yard blip in the endzone. Levy split the uprights, making it 24-21 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
  • Wesleyan threatened to score late in the stanza, but Nolan Tibball came up big with a breakup in the red zone to turn the Cardinals over on downs.
  • Wesleyan forced a fumble by Kennon on a sack during the next drive to secure the 24-21 win.
