#21 Men’s Soccer Cruises Past Norwich 4-0

The 21st-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team continued its hot start to the season, blanking in-state foe Norwich 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring with 10:10 elapsed. Luke Madden launched the ball over the top of the defense and Jordan Saint-Louis burst through the Cadet backline before lobbing his shot over Norwich keeper Nicholas Lanza for a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury nearly doubled its advantage with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. Harper Nicholl fired a low, right-footed shot that was denied by the legs of Lanza. The rebound fell to Alem Muris Hadzic, whose effort was cleared off the line by a Cadet defender, keeping the score 1-0 at halftime.
  • The Panthers picked up where they left off to start the second half. After 5:53 of action, following a goalmouth scramble, Will Sawin almost poked the ball into the net from a yard away, but Lanza sprawled to save the shot.
  • At the 58:13 mark, Middlebury scored its second tally. Saint-Louis whipped in a corner kick and Madden rose highest to head the ball into the bottom left corner and make it 2-0.
  • The Panthers took a 3-0 lead at the 72:06 mark. Saint-Louis bagged his second marker of the night, pouncing on a loose ball 18 yards from goal, before dribbling past the goalkeeper and slotting his shot into the net.
  • Nearly four minutes later, Middlebury tacked on a fourth tally. Gavin Randolph latched onto the ball in the 18-yard box and clipped a centering pass to Jacob Charles, who volleyed his shot into the upper netting to bring the final score to 4-0.
NOTES
  • The Panthers own a 56-3-4 record against Norwich, including a 15-0-1 mark in the last 16 meetings.
  • With the victory, goalkeeper Ryan Grady recorded his 30th career shutout, which is the most in Middlebury history.
  • During the match, the United Soccer Coaches National Ranking was released, which saw the Panthers move to #21 in the country.
The Panthers will be back in action on September 16, when they travel to Hamilton for a NESCAC matchup.
