Middlebury's
Baldwin Gittens scored 37:42 into the first half to lead the Panther women's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory over Wheaton (Mass.). The goal was Gittens' second goal of the week and her first career game-winning tally.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Emma Binks had a pair of quality scoring chances early on for Middlebury. The best opportunity came in the eighth minute on a quick one-touch from six yards out, but the attempt went just wide right of the post.
- The Lyons nearly got on the scoreboard at the 20:06 mark, but a right-footed shot by Maya Thomas from outside the 18 hit the crossbar and bounced over the top.
- Gittens recorded the game's lone goal with 7:18 showing on the first-half clock. Abby Ward dribbled down the left side, sending a cross to the middle of the pitch toward Gittens who quickly spun to her right, lifting the ball into the upper-right corner for the 1-0 lead.
- Wheaton looked to knot the contest in the final minute of the opening stanza as Kate Wickenheisser took a left-footed attempt from close range that Middlebury goalie Sydney Poppinga denied with a great save to preserve the 1-0 Panther edge.
- Middlebury applied pressure in the initial minutes of the second half, but a header by Carolina Espinosa sailed just over the crossbar with 36:39 left.
- The Panthers appeared to have increased their lead in the 69th minute. Fanny Lodge headed a cross on a corner kick toward the left post, but Lyon defender Taylor Matsubara cleared the attempt before it went over the line to keep the match at 1-0 in favor of Middlebury.
