2023 Field Hockey Season Preview

The five-time defending NCAA and NESCAC Champion Middlebury field hockey team opens the 2023 campaign on Tuesday, September 5. The Panthers became the first field hockey program in NCAA history to capture five-straight national titles, defeating #4 Johns Hopkins in overtime in the national championship game to conclude the season with a 21-1 overall mark. Over the last five seasons, Middlebury boasts an impressive 105-5 record.

Charlotte Marks returns to lead a defensive unit that allowed a miniscule 12 goals last season and posted 13 shutouts last year. The two-time All-NESCAC honoree and was honored played the most minutes of any field player (1,215) and earned her first All-American nod at the conclusion of the campaign. Sadie LeStage started every game last year, contributing three goals and four assists, including the game-winning tally in the NCAA Regional Final.

Amy Griffin led the conference in both points (50) and assists (14). The midfielder paced Middlebury with 18 goals and scored the overtime tally in the national championship game to be named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Katherine Lantzy was an all-region and NCAA All-Tournament team selection last season. Lantzy started all 22 contests and dished out six assists, good for second most on the team.

 Offensively, Katie George and Audrey Lazar will all take the field up front for the Panthers. George is a three-time All-American and a three-time All-NESCAC selection, finishing second on the team in points (40) and goals (17) last season. Lazar scored 16 markers a year ago, including a hat trick in the national semifinal to propel Middlebury into the title match. 

Coach Katharine DeLorenzo

Katharine DeLorenzo enters her 23rd season as the Borgen Family Head Coach of Field Hockey. She is joined by returning assistant coaches Lauren McNally, Jackie Mountford and Lauren Schweppe ’18. The Middlebury field hockey coaching staff has been named the NESCAC and NFHCA Division III Coaching Staff of the Year in each of the last five seasons.
