Softball Travels to Tufts for NESCAC Quarterfinal

The Panthers will face Tufts in the NESCAC Quarterfinal on Friday, May 12.
The eighth-seeded Middlebury softball team will travel to #6/top-seeded Tufts to take on the Jumbos in the NESCAC Quarterfinal on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. 
  
ABOUT MIDDLEBURY
  • The Panthers earned the eighth seed in the conference tournament, finishing with a 7-11 record in NESCAC play.
  • Middlebury is making its 12th appearance in the conference tournament and has won 11 contests in that span, both of which are fourth-most in the league.
  • The Panthers are looking to claim their second-ever conference title and first since 2011.
  • The program has advanced to the final on three occasions.
PANTHERS TO WATCH
  • Kristyn Carroll has been an offensive dynamo for Middlebury this season. The first year leads the team in a host of categories including batting average (.427), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.728), runs (39), hits (44), doubles (13), triples (3) and walks (17).
  • In the middle of the order, Megan Fox has launched a team-high five home runs this year, while also driving in the fourth-most runs in the league (38). Abby Santis has smacked 13 doubles this year and is second on the team in hits with 42, while batting .378.
  • McKenna Lont has played a key role in both pitching and hitting this season. At the plate, the first year has driven in 19 runs on 30 hits. In the circle, Lont has a team-high seven wins, while holding opponents to a .281 batting average.
  • Jewel Ashbrook leads the squad in innings pitched (76.1) and strikeouts (35), while also boasting a 3.03 ERA.
ABOUT TUFTS
  • Tufts secured the top seed in the conference following a 35-3 regular season which included a 17-1 record in NESCAC play.
  • The Jumbos are making their 21st appearance in the NESCAC Tournament, having participated in every tournament since its inception in 2001.
  • Tufts leads the conference with 12 championships and has won two of the last three. 
  • The Jumbos are currently the only nationally-ranked team in the NESCAC.
JUMBOS TO WATCH
  • Rachel Moore (.455) holds the second-highest batting average in the conference. Moore has a team-best six homers this season while also tying for the team lead in hits (55).
  • Josie Steinberg has been crucial to Tufts' success this season, totaling 55 hits and 40 RBIs, which are third-most in the conference.
  • In the leadoff spot, Bela Jimenez has the third-highest batting average (.443) and on-base percentage (.487) in the NESCAC, while also tallying 47 hits and 41 runs on the year.
  • Emilie Doty and Sophia Dicocco have been dominant in the circle. Doty leads the conference with a minuscule 0.72 ERA and has struck out 87 batters while giving up a NESCAC-low 38 hits. Dicocco has an ERA of 1.21 and has amassed a team-high 12 wins. 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Middlebury and Tufts will meet for the 20th time on Friday afternoon. The Jumbos own a 15-4 record in the all-time series.
  • Tufts defeated the Panthers twice in doubleheader action earlier this season. 
  • The programs have met 11 times in the NESCAC Tournament, with the Jumbos holding an 8-3 lead in the series.
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • As the top seed in the tournament, Tufts will host the entire tournament. Quarterfinal action begins on Friday, May 12, with the winners advancing to the semifinal round on Saturday, May 13. The championship will be contested on Sunday, May 14.
