The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team blazed past #28 Skidmore 5-0 in NCAA Tournament action on Proctor Tennis Courts. The Panthers earned the program's seventh-straight NCAA Regional title, advancing to the quarterfinals for the 10th time.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The top tandem of Amy Delman and Sahana Raman blanked their opponents 8-0 to grab the first point of the day.
- The second slot was a back-and-forth affair. Trailing 4-1, Gena Huang and Claudia Miller mounted an incredible comeback. The pair knotted the score at 7-7 and topped Thoroughbreds Ella Provost and Grace Truong 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
- Middlebury's Nina Farhat and Sami Remis closed out the doubles portion with an 8-4 win to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
- At #2 singles, Delman raced past her opponent, triumphing 6-1, 6-1.
- In the sixth slot, Huang nabbed the deciding point with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-0).
- When the match was clinched, #1 Raman, #3 Lulu Wu, #4 Nathalie van der Reis and #5 Miller were each up by one set.
NOTES
- Delman and Huang each earned their 30th career victory, while Huang won her fifth-straight match.
- The Delman/Raman duo improved to 10-0 at the top of the lineup.
- Farhat and Remis claimed their sixth-consecutive win and improved to 10-1 overall in doubles play.
- Today's contest marked the 48th meeting with Skidmore, a series that dates back to 1971. The Panthers improved to 30-16-1 overall, and are now 3-0 against the Thoroughbreds in NCAA Regional final bouts.
Middlebury takes on #15 Johns Hopkins University in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday, May 14 with a time to be determined. The remaining rounds of the tournament will take place at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
