The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team topped #15 Johns Hopkins 5-2 in NCAA Quarterfinal action.
Amy Delman hit a service winner to clinch the match at #2 singles, keeping the Panthers' bid alive for the program's first national title.
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Nina Farhat and Sami Remis grabbed the first point of the day in the third spot of doubles, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Blue Jay duo Anjali Devireddy and Christina Huynh cut the deficit to a pair (4-2), but that was as close as they would get. A slicing shot down the left line by Farhat secured the seventh game to push the advantage to 5-2 en route to the 8-2 victory.
- Knotted 1-1 at the top of the lineup, Delman and Sahana Raman rattled off three-straight triumphs for a 4-1 lead. Johns Hopkins' pair Kamila Wong and Jay Xiao slowly started a comeback bid, cutting the lead down to a pair (7-5). In the final game, Raman's service proved to be the difference, lifting the Panther duo to an 8-5 win.
- For the second match in a row, tandem Gena Huang and Claudia Miller had a hard-fought battle at #2. The pair had seven games go to deuce, but the match was ultimately decided in a tiebreaker where Blue Jay pair MaryBeth Hurley and Emily Javedan edged Middlebury 7-5 to earn the 8-7 (5) win and make it 2-1.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Miller's loss in doubles action fueled her to a strong victory at #5. Ahead 5-2, she shut out her opponent in the final game to claim the opening set 6-2. Knotted at 3-3 in the second frame, Miller rattled off three-consecutive wins, pushing the Panther lead to 3-1.
- In the top spot, Raman found herself deadlocked at three games a piece in the first set, but claimed three-straight victories for the 6-3 final. In the second, Raman took a 2-0 edge and never looked back en route to the 6-2 triumph that put Middlebury ahead 4-1.
- At #3, Lulu Wu battled Wong in a tightly-contested pair of sets. Both sets were tied four different times, but it was Wong who came out on top 7-5 each time to make it 4-2.
- Delman clinched the match in the second spot. The opening set was a thrilling tiebreaker victory, with Delman relinquishing just three points (7-6 (3)). Delman trailed 2-1 in the second, but did not allow a point in the fourth game to knot the set at two games apiece. The Panther pulled away from her opponent, blanking her in the final game with a service winner (6-4) to clinch the match 5-2 for Middlebury.
- When the match was finished, Nathalie van der Reis had split the first pair of sets at #4 (6-2, 5-7) and was up 5-2 in the third.

- Delman and Raman improved to 11-0 with the victory.
- Farhat and Remis claimed their seventh-straight victory, while handing their opponents their first loss of the season.
- Raman has won six of her last seven matches that have gone to completion, while Miller has won 12 of the last 13.

Middlebury takes on top-ranked University of Chicago on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's semifinal.
