Middlebury Makes Sixth-Straight Appearance In NCAA Semifinals, Falls To #1 UChicago

The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team made its sixth-straight appearance in the NCAA Semifinals on Tuesday. The Panthers fell 5-1 to top-ranked University of Chicago, finishing the year with a 17-4 overall mark.
 
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Maroon duo of Claudia Ng and Perene Wang earned the day's first point with an 8-1 victory at #2.
  • Middlebury evened the match at one point apiece with a come-from-behind triumph by Amy Delman and Sahana Raman in the top spot. The pair trailed 5-3 before powerful serving by Raman cut the deficit to one (5-4). The next three games went to deuce, with Middlebury winning game point in all of them to take a 7-5 edge. The Panthers closed out the match by claiming the final game for an 8-5 triumph.
  • Of the 11 games played in the third spot, eight of them went to deuce for Nina Farhat and Sami Remis. UChicago's Nicole Geller and Lauren Khou ultimately earned the 8-3 win to put the Maroons up 2-1.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
  • UChicago didn't let up, grabbing a pair of straight-set victories at #4 (6-1, 6-2) and #3 (6-2, 6-1) to increase its advantage to 4-1.
  • The match was clinched in the sixth spot by Ng with a 6-3, 6-2 win. 
  • When the contest was secured, #1 Raman and #5 Claudia Miller had split the initial pair of sets and were in their third against their opponents. Delman had claimed her opening set 6-4 in the second spot, and was in the middle of the second. 
NOTES
  • Delman and Raman finished the year with an unblemished 12-0 mark at the top of the doubles lineup.
  • Despite the loss today, Lulu Wu caps the season with the most program wins (20-9), while Raman and Nathalie van der Reis each had 17 victories. 
Raman will represent the program at the NCAA Singles Championship later this week, with play beginning with the rounds of 32 and 16 on Friday.
