Baseball Advances To NESCAC Championship

The Middlebury baseball team fell to Tufts 8-4 in Saturday's opening game, but bounced back to defeat Colby 12-6 in the second contest to set up a rematch with the Jumbos in the NESCAC Championship. The Panthers take the field at 10:30 a.m. needing to win twice over the Jumbos to claim the conference crown.
 
HIGHLIGHTS VS. TUFTS
  • Middlebury jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Sammy Smith was hit by a pitch, Andrew Gough singled and Lucas Flemming walked to load the bases. Alec Ritch came through with a base hit to left field to plate the first two runs of the contest.
  • The Panthers extended their lead in the following inning when Mitchell Schroeder continued his hot hitting, blasting a solo home run to left to make it 3-0.
  • Tufts answered with three runs in the fourth on a Connor Davidson three-run homer to left to level the score at 3-3.
  • The Jumbos took the lead in the fifth. With runners on the corners, Jimmy Evans doubled to center field to drive in two runs. Later in the inning with Evans on third, Patrick Soloman lifted a sacrifice fly to right to put Tufts ahead 6-3.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Jumbos extended their lead to 8-3 on a two-run homer by Connor Bowman.
  • Flemming led off the final frame with a homer to cut the deficit to four, but the Jumbos hung on for the 8-4 victory.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. COLBY
  • In the top of the second, Middlebury got on the board. Kyle McCausland sent the first pitch he saw over the centerfield fence for a 1-0 Panther advantage.
  • Middlebury struck for four runs in the fourth. John Collins led off by crushing a homer to dead center. McCausland followed with a base on balls, while Schroeder and Flemming were each hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gough walked which allowed McCausland to cross home plate and make it 3-0. Schroeder came in to score on a double play and Andrew Ashley beat out an infield single to plate Flemming and give the Panthers a 5-0 advantage.
  • The Mules responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Brady O'Brien smacked a round tripper to make it 5-1.
  • Middlebury extended its lead back to five (6-1) in the top of the fifth. Ritch was hit by a pitch and advanced on a wild pitch and flyout before scampering home on an RBI single by Schroeder.
  • Colby cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the fifth as a two-run double by Ryan Grace brought the score to 6-3.
  • In the sixth, the Panthers added three more runs. With the bases loaded, Ritch was hit by a pitch and Collins hit a sacrifice fly, before McCausland smacked a double to right center to bring home Smith and give the visitors a six-run advantage (9-3).
  • Middlebury tacked on a 10th run in the seventh inning on a base hit up the middle from Chris Borter.
  • The Mules would not go away, as Cole Palmeri blasted a three-run home run in the bottom half of the frame to bring the hosts within four (10-6). 
  • The Panthers added two more runs in the eighth and closed out the 12-6 triumph.
NOTES
  • The 27 wins (27-10) this season are the second-highest total in program history.
  • Middlebury will look to win its second-consecutive NESCAC title and its third overall on Sunday.
  • With today's victory, head coach Mike Leonard earned his 250th career victory. He is 126-79 during his time at Middlebury.
  • The Panthers have reached the championship series in all six of their NESCAC Tournament appearances.
  • With hits in both games today, Gough has now extended his hitting streak to an impressive 13-straight games.
