Panthers Fall To Tufts In NESCAC Championship Game

The Middlebury baseball team finished as the NESCAC runner-up in the conference's double-elimination tournament, falling to Tufts 12-1 on Sunday morning.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Jumbos scored in each of the initial seven innings, including one in the first on a run-scoring single down the right-field line from Connor Bowman and two more in the second on a double by Connor Flavin for a 3-0 lead.
  • Middlebury looked to get on the board in the top of the third with two outs. Chris Borter doubled to left-center field and Beau Root walked, but pitcher Connor Podeszwa got a groundout to get out of the jam.
  • Tufts added two more in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth for an 8-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers put runners on first and second in the sixth. Beau Root leadoff with a single up the middle and Alec Ritch walked, but Podeszwa got a flyout and double play to end the rally.
  • The Jumbos tacked on one tally in the sixth and three more in the seventh for a 12-0 lead.
  • Middlebury broke up the shutout with a single score in the final frame. Kyle McCausland ripped a one-out single to left and moved to second on a base hit up the middle from Andrew Ashley. Sammy Smith loaded the bases full of Panthers with a single to left before a sacrifice fly from Andrew Gough to center brought home McCausland for the final 12-1 score.
NOTES
  • Root has tallied a hit in each of his last five games played.
  • The Panthers reached the championship series in each of their six NESCAC Tournament appearances.
  • With its two victories this weekend, Middlebury holds a 17-10 overall record in the NESCAC Tournament. 
  • The Panthers defeated Colby on Friday in comeback fashion 7-6, before falling to Tufts on Saturday afternoon by an 8-4 score. Middlebury eliminated the Mules from the tournament later in the day 12-6 to advance to Sunday's championship game.
 The Panthers will await their NCAA Tournament fate when the field is announced on Monday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
