Softball Edged By #6 Tufts In Eight-Inning NESCAC Quarterfinal Thriller

The eighth-seeded Middlebury softball team saw its season come to an end in a thrilling contest, dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in eight innings to top-seeded/#6 Tufts in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to get on the board in the top of the first inning on back-to-back one-out hits by Kristyn Carroll and Abby Santis, but Tufts pitcher Sky Johnson worked out of the jam with two strikeouts.
  • The Jumbos put together a rally in the home half of the second inning with runners on second and third with two outs, but Panther Jewel Ashbrook struck out Emma Jacobson looking to end the threat.
  • Middlebury broke the scoreless tie in the third. Jordyn Johnson reached on an infield single and raced around the bases to score on a double to left center from Carroll for the 1-0 lead. Carroll moved to third on a groundout and touched home following a run down on a fielder's choice off the bat of Megan Fox to make it a 2-0 contest.
  • Tufts loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth and managed to scratch a run across on a sacrifice fly from Nicole Russo. Two pitches later, Ashbrook induced a lineout double play to get out of the inning and keep it a 2-1 score.
  • The hosts tied the game in the sixth. Rachel Moore reached on an infield single and eventually touched home on a run-scoring double to left by Russo for a 2-2 score.
  • In the bottom of the seventh following a one-out single from Bela Jimenez, the Panther infield turned a double play to send the game to extra innings.
  • The Jumbos loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kaitlyn Perucci started the rally with a walk and scored the game-winning run on a single down the right-field line by Jacobson for the 3-2 final score.
NOTES
  • Fox's run-scoring single in the third gave her a team-leading 39 RBI for the season, placing her fourth in the NESCAC.
  • Carroll increased her hitting streak to seven-straight games, going 2-3 with a double.
  • Friday's contest marked the 12th meeting in the NESCAC Tournament between the programs.
The Panthers finish with a winning record for the 12th time in the last 13 full seasons.
