Panthers Open NESCAC Championship Weekend With Come-From-Behind Victory Over Colby

The Middlebury baseball team mounted a late comeback in the opening game of the NESCAC Championship weekend, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, to rally past Colby 7-6 on Friday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mules struck for five runs in the game's opening frame. With the bases loaded, Colby took the lead on a Panther miscue. A pair of singles by Marcus Forrester and Matthew Panker plated three more runs, before a sacrifice fly by Patrick McConnell made it 5-0.
  • Middlebury got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Mitchell Schroeder and Sammy Smith began the inning with back-to-back base hits and Andrew Gough walked to load the bases. Andrew Ashley drew a base on balls to bring in the inning's first run, before a single from Chris Borter brought Smith home to make it 5-2.
  • The Mules responded with a run in the top of the seventh. McConnell led off with a triple to left and was brought home by a sac fly from Clint Flippo to give Colby a four-run edge (6-2).
  • The Panthers continued to chip away at Mules' advantage, cutting it to a one-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh. Singles from Kyle McCausland and Schroeder as well as a walk by Gough set the stage for Lucas Flemming, who roped a double to center field to bring in two runs and sent Gough to third. Borter reached on a miscue by the Colby infield which allowed Gough to cross home plate and close to within one (6-5).
  • Middlebury completed the comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Schroeder leveled the score (6-6), leading off with a booming home run to left-center field. Smith walked, Gough singled and Flemming was intentionally walked to load the bases. Smith crossed home plate and clinched the 7-6 victory on a walk-off balk.
NOTES
  • Alex Price started his 29th career game in the victory, moving him into second place in the Middlebury record books.
  • Gough has now hit safely in 11-straight contests.
  • Today's contest was only the second matchup in the NESCAC Tournament between the two programs, with the Panthers claiming both games.
With the win in the double-elimination tournament, the Panthers face the winner of Tufts and Bowdoin on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
