The Middlebury baseball team split a pair of NESCAC West contests on Saturday with Wesleyan. The Cardinals secured the best-of-three series with a 5-3 victory in seven innings to start the day. In the nightcap, the Panthers downed Wesleyan 23-2, recording a season-high total for runs scored.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury got on the board first in the third inning. Andrew Gough drew a one-out walk and raced around to score on a bouncing double down the right-field line by Beau Root for the 1-0 lead.
- The Panthers increased their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth. Alec Ritch singled to center and Root followed with a triple that one-hopped into the base of the wall to plate Ritch. On the very next pitch, John Collins pushed a single through the right side to drive in Root.
- The Cardinals pulled to within two (3-1) in the top of the sixth when Christian Boudreau raced home on a wild pitch.
- Wesleyan scored four times in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer to center by Ethan Diaz for a 5-3 advantage.
- The Panthers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning, but Cardinal reliever Ian Appleby induced a flyout to end the contest and secure the 5-3 victory.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Cardinals grabbed an early 1-0 edge in the nightcap when Sylvester scored on a wild pitch.
- Middlebury took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame, tallying a pair on a two-run single by Kyle McCausland.
- The Panthers made it a 3-1 game in the second on a sacrifice fly to the warning track by Ritch, plating Chris Borter who ripped a one-out single earlier in the inning.
- Middlebury exploded for eight runs on seven hits in the third, including a two-run homer by McCausland, for an 11-1 lead.
- The Panthers scored five times in the fourth, added two more in the fifth and five in the sixth for the 23-1 advantage.Â
- Wesleyan recorded its second run in the ninth on an RBI single from Connor Sullivan for the final 23-2 tally.
NOTES
- McCausland's nine RBI in Saturday's second contest eclipse the single-game program record of eight set in 2008. Ritch tied the school mark for runs in a game with five.
- Justin Lessing picked up his team-leading fourth victory (4-0) in the nightcap, allowing just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over five innings.
The Panthers return to the field on Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. home contest against in-state foe Saint Michael's.
