Baseball Tops Saint Michael’s For Program’s 1,000th Win

The Middlebury baseball team slipped past in-state foe Saint Michael's 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, the Panthers made history, earning the program's 1,000th win.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Alec Ritch led off the game by doubling down the left-field line and stole third. John Collins reached on a Purple Knight miscue and drove in Ritch for a 1-0 edge
  • In the second, the Panthers added two more runs. Chris Borter was hit by a pitch before stealing second. Andrew Gough brought him home with a double to right field. Ritch followed with a two-base hit over the left-fielder's head to drive in Gough and make it 3-0.
  • Saint Michael's got on the board in the top of the third. Nate Rogers reached safely due to a Middlebury miscue. After eventually moving to third on a ground out, Ulysses Luciano skied a sacrifice fly to left that brought Rogers across the plate, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
  • The Panthers picked up another run in the fourth. Beau Root roped a line-drive triple to the center field fence that plated Gough, who had reached on an error, bringing the score to 4-1.
  • The Purple Knights responded with a run in the fifth inning. Jack Weber was hit by a pitch and Terence Monyihan singled to center field. The pair each moved up a base on an error before Luciano plated Weber with a sacrifice fly.
  • Middlebury extended its lead to three in the bottom of the sixth. Jack Stolper blasted a double off the center-field wall. Root followed by smacking a triple to right field to plate Stolper and give the Panthers a 5-2 advantage.
  • Saint Michael's cut the deficit to one (5-4) in the eighth inning. Sam Cavossa opened the frame with a walk and Anthony Santosuossa doubled to put runners on second and third. Jack Fischer blooped a single to center field that brought both runners home and pulled the Purple Knights within one.
  • Baker Angstman restored Middlebury's three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, the infielder poked a base hit into left field that scored Stolper and Kyle McCausland and put the Panthers on top by a score of 7-4.
  • Andrew Gatland made quick work of Saint Michael's in the top of the ninth, allowing just one hit before striking out Santosuossa to earn the save and win the game 7-4.
NOTES
  • Root's two triples in the contest tied the Middlebury single-game record and moved him into a tie for the single-season mark with five.
  • Ritch and McCausland each extended their hitting streaks to five games, while Root has registered a hit in his last four contests.
  • Middlebury and Saint Michael's met for the 161st time in a series that dates back to 1910. The Panthers earned their 108th victory in the all-time series.
