Panthers Clipped By Cardinals in Extra Innings

The Middlebury baseball team fell to Wesleyan 9-8 in 10 innings during the home opener and the first contest of a three-game NESCAC West set on Friday. The two teams will face off in twinbill action on Saturday with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning of play. Kyle McCausland roped a double off the center-field fence to bring Alec Ritch home from third base for the early edge.
  • The Cardinals leveled the score in the third inning. Luke LaSaracina drove a home run to center to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Ritch quickly restored the Panther advantage, blasting a two-run homer to deep left field in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 3-1.
  • In the fifth, Baker Angstman and Ritch began the inning with back-to-back singles to left. The pair advanced on a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly from John Collins brought Angstman across the plate for a 4-1 lead.
  • Wesleyan jumped in front in the top of the sixth. Kyle Sylvester led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-2. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Cole Torino doubled down the left-field line to clear the bases and give the Cardinals a 5-4 advantage.
  • Middlebury retook the lead in the seventh inning. With Nathan Samii on third, Beau Root beat out an infield hit and advanced to second on an errant throw before Collins doubled into the right centerfield gap to give the Panthers a 6-5 edge.
  • Wesleyan would not go away and tied the game in the eighth. Evan Diaz and Tyler Cosgrove each singled and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Torino. Christian Bordeau followed with a sac fly to center field that plated Diaz and tied the contest at 6-6.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals surged ahead with a pair of tallies. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch allowed both runners to come around to score giving the visitors an 8-6 edge.
  • Middlebury answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the ninth. Samii and Mitchell Schroeder opened the inning with walks before Root bunted for a single to load the bases. McCausland wasted no time, driving a single to left field on the second pitch of the at-bat to level the game at 8-8.
  • The Cardinals found the winning run in the 10th. With runners on first and second, Sylvester roped a base hit to left field that scored LaSaracina to make it 9-8.
NOTES
  • Alex Price struck out 11 batters in the contest, matching his season high and moving him into a tie for fourth place in the Middlebury record books with 167 career strikeouts.
  • Ritch's home run in the third inning was the 13th of his career which is tied for fifth-best in Middlebury history.
