The Middlebury women's track and field team won its second-straight NESCAC Championship on Saturday, accumulating 154 points to edge runner-up Tufts (147 points). The Panthers' performance was highlighted by individual discus champion
Madeline Sauders, the winning 4x800-meter relay squad of
Tatum Peskin,
Audrey Grimes,
Lily Bulczynski and
Elle Thompson and 10 additional All-NESCAC finishes.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Sauders claimed the crown in the discus with a toss of 39.66m, which was over two meters further than the next finisher.
- The 4x800 relay quartet stopped the clock in 9:23.12, winning the event by nearly seven seconds.
- Four Panthers finished in the top-10 in the shot put, led by Julia Tulimieri who was the runner-up with a toss of 11.82m. Lilly Wurtz was next in fourth (11.49m), while Mary Scott Robinson rounded out the top-five (11.12m).
- Leaping into runner-up honors in a pair of events was Cady Barns, placing second in the long jump (5.50m) and the triple jump (11.51m). Barns also placed fourth in the 100 with a clocking of 12.62.
- The 4x100 relay team of Melissa White, Michelle Louie, Barns and Eva Kaiden finished in second place with a time of 48.32.
- Also earning runner-up laurels was Ciara Dale, stopping the clock in 1:03.59 in the 400 hurdles.
- Emily Rubio tallied two third-place efforts to earn All-NESCAC honors. She cleared the bar at 1.62m in the high jump and crossed the finish line in 15.36 in the 100 hurdles.
- The 4x400 relay squad (Louie, Annabel Cloney, Dale and Anna Krouse) earned all-conference status with a time of 3:58.82 which was good for third place.
- The middle-distance group had a great day. Kate Kenny finished in third in the 1,500 with a time of 4:40.42. Grimes (11:12.69) and Peskin (11:18.81) went third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase.
- In the javelin, Jaxon Palmer finished in third with a launch of 34.78m, while Reilly Isler was two spots back in fifth (34.09m). Palmer also finished in fourth in the hammer throw, tossing the implement 43.01m.
- White rounded out the fourth-place finishes with a personal-best time of 25.36 in the 200. She also placed fifth in the 100 with a clocking of 12.67.
NOTES
- The Panthers claimed their fourth title and second straight (1998, 2000, 2022) and have finished in the top-three spots 18 years in a row.
- Any individual athlete or relay team finishing in the top-three spots earns All-NESCAC honors.
- The high jump and pole vault events were contested on Friday afternoon due to impending weather for Saturday.
Middlebury will send a group of athletes to the Division III New England Championship hosted by Springfield next weekend.
