The top-seeded/#4 Middlebury women's tennis team cruised past #8 seed Colby by a 5-0 score during NESCAC Quarterfinal action on Friday. The win is the fifth-straight triumph for the Panthers.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers secured the first two points within minutes of each other. The top duo of Amy Delman and Sahana Raman dropped the opening game but reeled off six-consecutive wins en route to an 8-3 triumph.
- Knotted at 1-1, the #2 tandem of Gena Huang and Claudia Miller claimed five of the next six games during an 8-3 win.
- In a back-and-forth match in the third slot, the Middlebury pair of Nina Farhat and Sami Remis won the final two points in the tiebreaker for an 8-7 (6) victory to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
- Amanda Frank continued the Panther momentum in singles play, easing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the bottom of the lineup.
- Miller cruised in her opening set at #5 (6-0). Trailing 4-2 in the second set, Miller posted four-consecutive game wins to clinch the match 6-0, 6-4.
- The other four matches went unfinished in the top-four spots. Raman was down a set and 4-3 in the second set at #1, while Delman was a game away from securing a point in the second position (6-0, 5-4). At #3, Lulu Wu won an opening-set tiebreaker while Huang fell in a tiebreaker at the fourth position.
NOTES
- The win by Frank was her fifth straight in singles, while Miller improved to 9-1 in her last 10 matches.
- Middlebury and Colby met for the 29th time with the Panthers owning a 25-4 advantage in the series.
- The Panthers have won 19-straight matchups against the Mules, including a 6-3 regular-season victory on April 15.
- The two programs played for the second-straight postseason in the quarterfinal round, with Middlebury earning identical 5-0 decisions.
- All matches contested during the postseason are played until one team secures the decisive fifth point.
The Panthers continue postseason play when they compete against fifth-seeded Williams in semifinal action on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The other semifinal features second-seeded Wesleyan and an opponent to be determined.
