#4 Women’s Tennis Tops Williams 5-1 In NESCAC Semifinals, Advances to Title Tilt

The #4/top-seeded Middlebury women's tennis team topped #11/fifth-seeded Williams 5-1 in NESCAC Quarterfinal action. The Panthers advance to the title tilt for the sixth-consecutive season, and are seeking the program's first crown when they take on #5/second-seed Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The top duo of Sahana Raman and Amy Delman jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead and never looked back, dropping just one game to earn an 8-1 victory and get Middlebury on the board.
  • Trailing 4-2, the second tandem of Claudia Miller and Gena Huang answered with six-consecutive game victories, claiming an 8-4 win to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.
  • At #3, Brinlea La Barge and Lulu Wu took a 2-0 lead, but Williams pair Mia Thomman and Annabelle Siegel responded and kept a one-to-two game edge for a majority of the match to secure the 8-6 triumph.
  • Miller was dominant in the sixth slot, jumping out to a 2-0 advantage in the first set before cruising to a 6-4 victory. In the second, Miller won four-straight games en route to the 6-2 win to put Middlebury up 3-1.
  • Raman increased the Panther advantage to 4-1 with a thrilling triumph in the top spot. She dropped the initial set 7-5, but battled back to claim the middle frame in tiebreaker fashion (8-6). That win propelled Raman in the final set, shutting out her opponent 6-0.
  • Wu clinched the match for Middlebury with another tight contest. At #3, she split the first two sets by scores of 6-4. The third came down to a tiebreaker, with Wu winning 7-4.
  • When the victory was secured, Huang was up 5-4 in the third set after spitting (6-3, 3-6) at #5. In the second spot,  Delman was in a close battle, trailing by just one (5-6), while Nathalie van der Reis' match did not start.
NOTES
  • With the triumph, the Panthers avenged their only regular-season conference loss, having fallen 6-3 to Williams earlier in the year.
  • Middlebury and Wesleyan have played in the last three championships, as the Panthers seek their first title. Middlebury edged the Cardinals 5-4 earlier this season. Wesleyan advanced to the championship with a 5-2 win over #8/third-seeded Amherst.
  • Raman won her fifth-straight singles match and seven-consecutive with doubles partner Delman. Huang claimed her fourth consecutive triumph.
