Baseball Rallies Past Amherst 7-6

The Middlebury baseball team sent eight batters to the plate and scored two runs in the ninth inning to rally past Amherst 7-6 on Friday afternoon in the opening game of this weekend's three-game NESCAC West set.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers struck for a run in the top of the second. Kyle McCausland led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mitchell Schroeder followed with a single through the left side to open the scoring for Middlebury, giving it a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mammoths responded with four runs in the latter half of the inning. With runners on second and third, Javier Irzarry smacked a double down the left-field line to plate two runs. Jack Boyle walked to put runners on first and second, and Jack Sampedro drove both players home with a two-run  double to make it 4-1.
  • In the fifth, the Panthers restored their one run edge. Andrew Gough and Chris Borter singled and Sammy Smith drew a walk to load the bases. Alec Ritch launched a grand slam over the center field fence to give Middlebury a 5-4 lead.
  • Amherst leveled the contest at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Padian roped a base hit down the right-field line to drive in Sampedro and tie the score.
  • The Mammoths tacked on another run in the sixth when Boyle singled up the middle, sending Tyler McCord home to give the hosts a 6-5 edge.
  • Ritch came through in the clutch again in the top of the ninth. Smith got things started with a bunt single, before moving to second on a failed pickoff and stealing third. Ritch singled up the middle to bring Smith home and tie the game at 6-6. John Collins and McCausland each kept the inning going by reaching on fielder's choices before Schroeder crushed a double into the left-center field gap to send Collins home and give Middlebury a 7-6 advantage.
  • Amherst threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting the tying run on second base, but Andrew Gatland worked out of the jam to secure the Panthers' 7-6 win.
