Baseball Takes One of Two in Doubleheader With Amherst

The Middlebury baseball team won the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader with Amherst by a score of 5-3, before falling in the second contest 13-2. With the victory in game one, the Panthers win the NESCAC West series, 2-1.
 
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the seven-inning opener, the Mammoths started the scoring in the second frame. Jack Dove doubled to left field and Jackson Reydel followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0.
  • Middlebury answered with two runs in the third to take the lead. Sammy Smith led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Kyle McCausland moved Smith to second with a base hit to center before Mitchell Schroeder singled through the left side to plate Smith and tie the game. Andrew Gough followed with a double into the right-center field gap that drove in McCausland and gave the Panthers a 2-1 edge.
  • Middlebury tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth. Alec Ritch blasted his second home run in as many games in the fifth to make it 3-1. The following inning, Gough led off with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. A base hit by Jack Stolper drove him home and extended the Panther lead to three (4-1).
  • Amherst answered with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth. With runners on the corners, Luke Padian singled down the left-field line to drive in both runs and cut the deficit to one (4-3).
  • In the top of the seventh, Middlebury added another run. With Ritch on third, McCausland hit a sac fly to right to bring him home and to make it 5-3.
  • The Mammoths had the bases loaded in the final inning, but Andrew Gatland got Amherst to ground into a double play to earn the save and secure the 5-3 victory. 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. The Panthers loaded the bases and brought in two runs on back-to-back Mammoth miscues.
  • Amherst responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Jack Sampedro walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming around to score on a Panther error to make it 2-1.
  • The Mammoths stormed into the lead in the second inning,tallying five runs on five hits, capped by a Jack McDermott single for a 6-2 edge.
  • The hosts continued to put distance between the two teams, adding runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-2 lead.
  • In the eighth, Amherst recorded four runs for the final 13-2 tally.
NOTES
  • Sawyer Duarte earned his fourth win of the year in the opener, tying him for the team lead.
  • Gatland picked up his second save of the weekend in the first game, giving him a team-high four on the season. 
  • Gough has continued to swing the bat well, extending his hitting streak to eight-straight games with base knocks in both ends of the doubleheader.
Middlebury returns to the diamond with a midweek contest at Plattsburgh State on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
