Panthers Pull Away From Castleton In Regular-Season Home Finale

The Middlebury baseball team scored seven runs in its final four at-bats for an 8-4 triumph over Castleton in the regular-season home finale.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Spartans struck with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Reece de Castro singled down the left-field line and moved to second on a Panther error, eventually scoring on a fielder's choice for the 1-0 edge.
  • Castleton added a run in the third as de Castro singled through the left side, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout before racing home on a wild pitch.
  • Middlebury tied the contest (2-2) in the bottom of the third. Zip Malley was hit by a pitch and cruised around the basepaths on a two-run home run by Sammy Smith to left-center field.
  • The Spartans scored a run in the fourth when Addison Schaub doubled down the left-field line, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-2 advantage.
  • Malley started a game-tying rally in the fifth with a double that bounced off the third-base bag and eventually knotted the game (3-3) on a sacrifice fly from Alec Ritch.
  • Castleton regained the lead at 4-3 in the sixth when Jackson Cardozo walked and later raced home as part of a double steal.
  • The Panthers tallied a run in the home half of the sixth when Nathan Samii was hit by a pitch, stole second and eventually touched home plate on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Middlebury broke the contest open in the seventh with three runs, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Smith and Ritch, for a 7-4 lead.
  • The Panthers tacked on a run in the eighth when Andrew Gough singled and scored on a Spartan throwing error for the final 8-4 score.
