Fourth-Ranked Panthers Edge #8 Amherst 5-4

The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team edged #8 Amherst on Saturday in a battle of top-10 nationally-ranked teams. The Panthers have won the last 11 meetings dating back to 2016. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The top Middlebury pair of Sahana Raman and Amy Delman held a 4-3 lead before winning the final four games during an 8-3 victory for a 1-0 edge.
  • In a back-and-forth match at #3, the Panther duo of Claudia Miller and Brinlea La Barge trailed 4-2 against their opponents, before winning four of the next five games for an 8-5 win.
  • The Mammoths cut the deficit to 2-1 with an 8-4 triumph at #2. 
  • Amherst pulled level in the match (2-2) with a straight-set win in the second singles slot and grabbed a 3-2 advantage behind a victory at #3.
  • The Panthers drew even (3-3) when Raman won in straight sets in the top spot. Victorious by a 6-3 tally in the opening set, Raman claimed three of the last four games for a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.
  • Middlebury regained the lead minutes later when La Barge battled back from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to win at #6. She won the last four games in the set, posting a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
  • Gena Huang clinched the match for the Panthers. Huang dropped the opening set 6-3, but rebounded with impressive 6-2 and 6-1 set wins in the fifth spot.
  • At #4, Miller split the first two sets with her opponent before falling in the third set for the final 5-4 tally. 
NOTES
  • The victory for Raman was the 40th of her career, sporting a 40-10 record.
  • La Barge picked up her sixth-straight victory during singles play.
  • Middlebury and Amherst played for the 52nd meeting in the all-time series with the Mammoths holding a slight 29-23 edge.
The Panthers close out the regular-season portion of their schedule on Sunday against Hamilton. First serve with the Continentals is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
