Baseball Ends Opening Weekend with 13-0 Triumph Over Hampden-Sydney

The Middlebury baseball team closed out the Huntingdon Tournament by earning its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, cruising past Hampden-Sydney 13-0.
 
HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Middlebury's Andrew Ashley opened the scoring in the first inning. With runners on first and second, Ashley drove a single to right field which plated one run. Alec Ritch followed with a double to center to bring home Ashley and John Collins, and give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
  • Middlebury tacked on three more runs in the second. With the bases loaded, Collins roped a single through the second-base hole, before Kyle McCausland singled to center, scoring two more runs and making the score 6-0.
  • The Panthers increased the lead to 7-0 in the third. Sammy Smith stole second before scampering home on a double to left by Zip Malley.
  • Collins opened the fourth inning with a triple, and later scored on a McCausland single to left.. Later in the inning, Andrew Gough hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in McCausland for the 9-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers secured the victory in the sixth. Smith plated a run on a single, and Baker Angstman blasted a three-run homer to make it 13-0.
NOTES
  • With the victory, head coach Mike Leonard won his 100th career game at Middlebury.
  • Justin Lessing pitched a gem in his season debut for the Panthers, going five innings and allowing no runs and just two hits. 
  • Middlebury met the Tigers for just the second time in history, and evened the series at 1-1 with the win.
