Strong Pitching & Timely Hitting Lifts Panthers To Sweep At Swarthmore

The Middlebury baseball team took advantage of two solid pitching performances as well as timely hitting to sweep Sunday's doubleheader of seven-inning contests over Swarthmore by 4-2 and 9-2 scores.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The contest was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings between Panther Alex Price and Swarthmore's Liam Alpern. Price struck out six while Alpern recorded five during the four frames.
  • The visitors threatened in the fifth with their first hits of the game on singles by Kyle McCausland and Andrew Gough, but Alpern worked out of the jam to keep it scoreless.
  • The Garnet struck first in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff home run from Kaiden Rosenbaum to left-center field.
  • Middlebury answered in its half of the sixth with four runs, highlighted by a three-run homer to left by McCausland, to take a 4-1 lead. The blast brought home John Collins who singled and Jack Stolper who reached on an error.
  • Swarthmore added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Xavier Taylor two-out RBI double, but Price finished the contest with his ninth strikeout for the final 4-2 score.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers struck early in the nightcap with a run on a one-out sacrifice fly from McCausland in the first inning, before the Garnet knotted the contest in the bottom half on a run-scoring groundout by Emmet Reynolds.
  • Middlebury regained the lead in their next at-bat, scoring twice on RBI singles from David Byrne and Baker Angstman, for a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Panthers tacked on another run in the third, as Stolper drew a one-out walk and scored on a groundout by Byrne for a 4-1 edge.
  • Swarthmore cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Nate Jbara reached on an infield single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
  • Middlebury tacked on five runs in the seventh as Beau Root was hit by a pitch and raced home on a single from Stolper. Byrne broke the game open, blasting a grand slam over the left field fence to make it a 9-2 victory.
NOTES
  • McCausland's homer in game one gave him a team-leading two roundtrippers.
  • Price earned the win in the opener for the Panthers, giving him 12 for his career. The lefthander is just one victory away from fifth place in the Middlebury career record books.
  • Byrne's six runs batted in during the nightcap are a career high.
  • Justin Lessing pitched the first five innings for the Panthers, tying his career-best total with eight strikeouts.
The team returns to action during its annual Spring Break trip to California when it takes on Chapman on Sunday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. eastern.
