Chapman Outlasts Middlebury In Extra Innings

The Middlebury baseball team opened its California spring trip with a back-and-forth 10-9 defeat to Chapman in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the opening frame. Andrew Gough singled and moved to second on a wild pitch, before John Collins drove Gough home with a base hit up the middle.
  • The hosts responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Davis Mieliwocki doubled down the left field line to bring in Cole Minato and level the score at 1-1.
  • The Panthers regained the lead in the third. Jack Stolper singled into right field to plate Collins. Kyle McCausland followed with a two-run homer to give the visitors a 4-1 edge.
  • Gough added to the advantage in the top of the fifth, blasting a solo home run to make the score 5-1.
  • The hosts closed to within one (5-4) in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Mieliwocki grounded into a fielder's choice, but A.J. Anzai was still able to rush home to score. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Brad Shimabuku was hit by a pitch, allowing a run to cross the plate and Josh Phillips popped a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 6-4.
  • Middlebury answered with two runs in the sixth. A double from Nathan Samii scored McCausland, before a sacrifice fly from Andrew Ashley brought Samii across the plate to restore the Panthers' lead (7-4).
  • Chapman would not go away and rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners on first and second, Austin Dudas layed down a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error allowed one run to score. With the bases loaded, Minato roped a base hit to left that drove in two scores and knotted the contest at nine apiece.
  • The Panthers moved back in front in the 10th inning. With runners on first and third, McCausland stole second and an errant throw from the catcher allowed Stolper to score, sending McCausland to third. The left fielder would eventually cross the plate himself due to a wild pitch to give Middlebury a 9-7 edge.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, the hosts plated three runs to claim the victory. A base hit from Brad Lang and a fielder's choice from Minato allowed two runs to score before Trent Turquand singled through the left side to bring home the game-winning run, making the final score 10-9.
NOTES
  • McCausland and Gough each extended their hitting streaks to six and five games, respectively.
  • The two programs met for just the second time today. In 2018, Chapman earned a 5-3 victory over the Panthers.
Middlebury will take the field again tonight when it takes on Occidental, before facing La Verne on Monday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m eastern.
