Baseball Opens Season With Pair of Games in Alabama

The Middlebury baseball team kicked off the season in Alabama on Saturday. The Panthers dropped the first game of the day 9-6 to Millsaps, before falling 16-12 in the nightcap against host Huntingdon.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. MILLSAPS
  • Middlebury's Jack Stolper got things going in the first, smacking a two-run single to right field to drive in Beau Root and John Collins for the early 2-0 edge.
  • In the second, Chris Borter and Andrew Ashley singled and Lucas Flemming walked to load the bases. Each Panther advanced on a passed ball to bring in Borter, before Alec Ritch walked to pack the bases again. Collins brought home Ashley with a single to left field, before Flemming touched the plate on an error to make it 5-0.
  • The Majors answered in the top of the third when back-to-back singles drove in a run each, before Case Page scampered home on a fielder's choice for the 5-3 score.
  • In its next at-bat, Millsaps took its first lead of the game and never trailed again, taking a 6-5 edge with a trio of runs.
  • The Majors added runs in the sixth and seventh to take an 8-5 advantage, but Middlebury got one run back in the seventh when Root touched home on a single by Stolper.
  • Millsaps capped the scoring in the top of the eighth when EJ Ousley drove in Ware with a single to left field for the 9-6 triumph.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. HUNTINGDON
  • The Panthers got things going in the first inning of the second game. Collins belted a three-run homer over the fence for the early 3-0 advantage.
  • Huntingdon responded with a big initial inning, tallying five runs on five hits to take a 5-3 lead.
  • The Hawks continued their scoring frenzy in their next at-bat, tallying four runs to extend the advantage to 9-3.
  • Nathan Samii smacked a home run in the top of the third, driving in Stolper. With two outs on the board and the bases loaded, Sammy Smith touched home when Collins walked, before Kyle McCausland cleared the bases with a grand slam, giving Middlebury a 10-9 edge.
  • The Hawks added a trio of runs in both the fourth and seventh and never looked back en route to the 16-12 win.
