The 16th-ranked Middlebury men's basketball team shot 70% from beyond the arc in the second half to ease past Worcester State 76-51 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers face Nichols on Saturday at 6:10 p.m. in Pepin Gymnasium, with a trip to the sectional round on the line. The Bison advanced by defeating Rochester in a thrilling 74-71 come-from-behind victory in the day's first game.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Alex Sobel recorded a layup just 13 seconds into the game to put Middlebury up 2-0 early.
- Knotted at 8-8, the Lancers went on a 7-2 run capped by a three from Aaron Nkrumah at the 12:32 mark to give Worcester State a 15-10 advantage.
- The Panthers had an 8-3 burst over the ensuing 2:41. Jaden Bobbett closed out the span with back-to-back layups, knotting the contest at 18 points apiece.
- Tied 26-26 with 4:16 to go, the Lancers ended the half with a four-point spurt to take a 30-26 edge heading into intermission.
- Middlebury came out of the break firing on all cylinders, rattling off 12 of the first 14 points to take a 38-32 lead with 14:53 remaining.
- Worcester State wouldn't go away, cutting the deficit to three (41-38) on a four-point play from Sam Dion at the 13:35 mark.
- Nash Goldman buried back-to-back three-pointers, including one that was just inside halfcourt, to give the Panthers their first double-digit lead (47-38) with 12:57 left on the clock.
- Middlebury managed to keep a 10-point lead over the next several minutes. Ahead 56-46 at the 7:36 mark, the Panthers went on a 20-5 run. Thomas Zodda closed out the span with back-to-back layups off the bench to make the final score 76-51.
NOTES
- Sobel tallied his 38th-career double-double, leading all players in points (18) and rebounds (10). He also tallied six blocks, giving him 98 for the year which ranks third on Middlebury's single-season list.
- Noah Osher recorded 17 points, shooting 50% from beyond the arc.
- With the victory, Middlebury improves to 20-5 on the year, eclipsing the 20-win plateau for the ninth time in school history.
- The Lancers were making their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and first since 1994.
