Middlebury Edges #21 Cal Lutheran To Open Three-Game Series

The Middlebury baseball team opened a three-game series with #21 Cal Lutheran on Friday, utilizing timely hitting and a solid pitching performance for a 4-3 triumph over the Kingsmen. The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. pacific time.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Jack Stolper started the rally with a single through the right side. He moved to second on a balk and scampered to third on a groundout before scoring on a base hit to right by Andrew Ashley.
  • Ashley doubled the Middlebury edge two batters later when he raced around from second on a double off the bat of Zip Malley that fell just inside the right-field line.
  • Cal Lutheran tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a run-scoring single down the right-field line by Kyle Reuser and an RBI double inside the left-field chalk by Jalen Parks. Panther starting pitcher Justin Lessing worked out of the jam with runners on second and third with a strikeout and a ground out.
  • Middlebury loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out, taking the lead at 3-2 when Lucas Flemming drew a walk to drive in John Collins who started the frame with a single.
  • The Panthers increased the lead to 4-2 in the seventh. Zip Malley walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Gough. Malley promptly stole third and scored on an errant throw by the Kingsmen for the two-run advantage.
  • Cal Lutheran cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth with a single tally. Reuser was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a passed ball, but relief pitcher Henry Gustavson induced a double play and a flyout to right to secure the one-run victory.
NOTES
  • Lessing went a career-best seven innings to earn his team-high third win (3-0) on the mound for Middlebury. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
