The Middlebury baseball team downed 21st-ranked California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) in doubleheader action to complete its three-game weekend sweep. The Panthers edged the Kingsmen 6-4 in the first game of the day, before shutting out Cal Lutheran 10-0 in the nightcap. Middlebury won the opening game 4-3 on Friday night.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The teams traded runs in the second and third innings to deadlock the contest at 2-2.
- In the top of the fourth, Nathan Samii blasted his second round-tripper of the season to give Middlebury a 3-2 edge.
- The Panthers gained some breathing room in the fifth inning, increasing the advantage to 5-2. Andrew Gough reached on an error, before John Collins belted a two-run homer.
- Middlebury tacked on another tally in the top of the seventh when a sacrifice fly by Mitchell Schroeder sent Gough across the plate for the 6-2 lead.
- The Kingsmen threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs. Jalen Parks doubled down the left-field line to bring home Sean Blandino. Josh Quinn later scampered home on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Panthers recorded the final out to secure the triumph.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury carried the momentum into the second game, blanking Cal Lutheran 10-0.
- Jack Stolper scampered home on a passed ball in the first to give the Panthers an early 1-0 edge.
- In the top of the fifth, Kyle McCausland doubled down the left-field line to drive in Sammy Smith and Zip Malley, before touching home on a home run by Stolper for the 5-0 advantage.
- The Panthers took their commanding 10-0 lead two innings later. McCausland smacked a double to center to bring home Baker Angstman, before Collins belted his program-leading 20th career home run.
- The Kingsmen had a final push in the bottom of the ninth with runners on second and third, but Freddy Mosier struck out the final batter to secure the shutout.
NOTES
- In the opening game of the day, Alex Price was victorious on the mound, moving him into a tie for fifth place in Middlebury's record book with 13 career triumphs.
- Spencer Dessart earned his second win on the mound in game two, striking out a career-high nine batters in six innings of work, while allowing just two hits.
- Collins had a big day with a team-best five RBI, four hits and three runs. He also clobbered a pair of homers.
- Middlebury became the first team to capture a 3-0 series victory against Cal Lutheran since 2021.
The Panthers return to the East Coast and travel to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
