#4 Men’s Tennis Rallies Past #9 Johns Hopkins 5-4

The fourth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team concluded its spring break trip in California on Thursday afternoon, recording a come-from-behind victory over #9 Johns Hopkins in a battle between a pair of top-10 programs.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Blue Jays opened the match with victories in the first and third spots in doubles. 
  • Neel Epstein and Robby Ward responded with a win at #2 to make the score 2-1. Knotted at 5-5, the duo won three of the final four games to claim the 8-6 triumph.
  • Julian Wu (#5) and Noah Laber (#1) gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead, cruising to straight-set victories of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3 respectively.
  • Johns Hopkins leveled the contest at 3-3 following a win in the second slot.
  • Middlebury surged ahead 4-3 as Zihao Yuan downed his opponent (6-4, 6-4) in the sixth spot, before Epstein clinched the match with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 triumph at #3. During the first-game tiebreaker, Epstein trailed 4-0 before roaring back with seven-unanswered points to secure the win.
  • The Blue Jays claimed a victory in the fourth slot to bring the final score to 5-4.
NOTES
  • This was the first regular-season meeting between the two programs. The two squads had previously met four times in the NCAA Tournament with the Panthers holding a 3-1 edge.
  • Wu continues his stellar play this season. The first year moves to 16-2 overall and is currently riding a 14-match winning streak.
  • Laber has been a force at the top of the Middlebury lineup. With another win today, he has claimed victories in six of his seven matches this spring.
