#4 Men’s Tennis Eases Past #18 Pomona-Pitzer 8-1

The fourth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team downed Pomona-Pitzer 8-1 on Monday night in a battle between a pair of top-20 programs.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the match with two points in doubles action. Noah Laber and Aidan Harris claimed an 8-5 win in the top spot, while Julian Wu and Zihao Yuan earned an 8-6 triumph in the third slot.
  • The Sagehens picked up an 8-1 victory at #2 to earn their only point of the day.
  • Laber cruised to a straight-sets win (6-1, 6-4) at the top of the lineup, while Yuan secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #6 to increase Middlebury's advantage to 4-1. 
  • Harris clinched the match for the Panthers, easing past his opponent in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in the second slot.
  • At #3, Neel Epstein extended Middlebury's lead to 6-1 after his opponent retired at the beginning of the third set.
  • Wu (#5) and Robby Ward (#4) closed the match with wins of 7-6(3), 6-1 and 7-5, 6-4 respectively, to give the Panthers an 8-1 victory.
NOTES
  • Middlebury and Pomona-Pitzer met for the 13th time. The Panthers hold a 12-1 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last five contests.
  • Wu continued his dominant first year campaign, claiming his 13th-consecutive victory and 15th overall.
The Panthers are idle until Wednesday when they head to Azusa Pacific for their next match at 5:30 p.m. eastern.
