Tied 13-13 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Middlebury baseball team put together a pair of quality innings to outlast La Verne 21-14 on Monday night. The Panthers tied a school record with five home runs during the contest, with
John Collins and
Lucas Flemming each hitting a pair.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Collins blasted his first round-tripper of the game in his first at-bat to give Middlebury an early 1-0 edge.
- The Leopards tallied a pair of unearned runs in their half of the inning, before a two-run homer by Nathan Perry in the third put La Verne up 4-1.
- The Panthers restored their advantage in the fourth. A single by Jack Stolper brought home Kyle McCausland, before Flemming's first homer of the game plated Andrew Ashley and McCausland for the 5-4 edge.
- The Leopards plated four runs in the fifth inning to jump back in front 8-5.
- Flemming answered in the sixth, knocking the ball out of the park to bring home Ashley and Stolper to deadlock the contest at 8-8.
- A single, sacrifice fly and a double by La Verne in its half of the inning gave the hosts an 11-8 cushion.
- The seventh was highlighted by a double from Mitchell Schroeder and a triple from Ashley, allowing Middlebury to regain its lead 13-11.
- The Leopards would not go away, tying the contest 13-13 in the bottom of the seventh. Logan Reese scampered home on a single by Cameron Slessor, before Slessor stole home to knot the game again.
- The Panthers gained some breathing room in the eighth inning. Samii Smith touched the plate on a single through the left side by Andrew Gough, before Collins blasted his second homer of the game to make it 16-13.
- La Verne added a run in its half of the inning to cut the deficit to 16-14.
- Middlebury made good use of its final at-bats, scoring five runs to increase the advantage to 21-14. The inning was capped by a two-run round-tripper from Flemming.
- The Leopards threatened in their half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. The Panthers worked themselves out of the jam, with reliever Cole Crider striking out back-to-back batters and Ashley recording the final out in right field to secure the 21-14 win.
NOTES
- Kunal Handa earned his first career win on the mound, striking out a pair over 1.2 innings of work.
- McCausland led all players with four hits, increasing his hitting streak to seven consecutive games. Gough has recorded at least one hit in six-straight contests.
- Monday's contest was the first meeting between the programs.
The Panthers are idle until Wednesday when they head to the University of Redlands.
