Letterie’s Golden Goal Lifts #8 Middlebury Past Wesleyan

Middlebury's Jenna Letterie scored 22 seconds into overtime, leading the eighth-ranked Panthers to a 4-3 victory over Wesleyan in Chip Kenyon '85 Arena. The hosts battled back from three one-goal deficits to earn the triumph.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury looked to take the early lead just 1:18 into the first period, but a redirected pass by Caroline Cutter hit the right pipe and caromed away.
  • The Cardinals tallied the lone goal of the stanza at the 9:32 mark on a two-on-one rush. Caroline Mezias snuck a back-handed wrister past Panther goalie Sophia Merageas for the 1-0 lead.
  • The hosts looked for the equalizer during the period's final three minutes, but Wesleyan blocked all eight shots to maintain the one-goal advantage.
  • Middlebury knotted the contest (1-1) at 7:34 of the second frame. Cycling the puck around the zone, Maddie Bayard tapped in the loose puck on the doorstep.
  • The Cardinals regained the lead, taking advantage of a power-play with 15:47 expired. Christina Tournas fed a pass to the stick of Jenna Stevens, as Stevens one-timed the puck into the left side of the net.
  • The Panthers leveled the game (2-2) three minutes later, utilizing the extra skater following a Wesleyan penalty. Sabrina Kim gathered a bouncing puck between the circles, lifting a wrister over the shoulder of Cardinal goalie Rei Halloran.
  • The Cardinals once again took the lead (3-2) when a laser from the right point by Aimee Seppenwolde found its way through traffic and into the goal at the 15:15 mark.
  • Middlebury battled back to tie the contest at 3-3, scoring on a power play as Britt Nawrocki muscled the puck from the doorstep into the net with 2:42 left in regulation.
  • The Panthers nearly scored the game-winner with 1:10 showing on the clock, but Eva Hendrikson's blast from the left point trickled through the legs of Halloran before the Cardinal netminder laid on it to keep it from crossing the goalline to send it to overtime.
  • Skating three-on-three in the extra session, Middlebury won the opening faceoff and collected the puck in the defensive zone before pushing forward on a two-on-one-break. Kim sent a cross-ice pass to the stick of Letterie, who one-timed the puck into the net just 22 seconds into the frame for the final 4-3 score.
NOTES
  • Nawrocki's tally was her team-leading 11th this season. She has tallied at least one point in nine of the last 10 contests.
  • Letterie has five goals and a team-best 10 assists this season, giving her 91 career points.
  • Middlebury and Wesleyan met for the 69th time, with the Panthers owning a commanding 64-1-4 advantage in the all-time series.
The teams are back in action on Saturday, with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop to complete the weekend series.
