Women’s Basketball Pulls Away From Connecticut College 68-54

The Middlebury women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 68-54 win over Connecticut College Friday on Senior Day. Before the game, the Panthers honored seniors Reagan McDonald, Claire Miller and Olivia Mulloy for their efforts to the program. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Camels opened the contest by making six of their first seven shots to take an early 10-2 lead with 3:27 elapsed. 
  • Middlebury responded with a 9-2 run over the next 2:22, capped by a three-pointer from McDonald, to storm ahead 13-12.
  • The Panthers continued to add to their advantage throughout the remainder of the opening quarter, as a shot from beyond the arc from Calie Messina brought the lead to seven (21-14) as the first frame came to a close.
  • Connecticut College began the second quarter similarly to the first, scoring seven-unanswered points to knot the game at 21-21.
  • The two teams continued to trade baskets during the stanza until the 2:07 mark when a layup from Augusta Dixon put the Panthers ahead 32-30 and broke the deadlock for good.
  • Strong defense and buckets from Alexa Mustafaj and McDonald gave Middlebury a seven-point edge (37-30) heading into the halftime break.
  • The Camels continued to battle back and at the 6:58 mark, a jump shot from Abby Ilusorio cut the deficit to just one (39-38).
  • The Panthers utilized a 15-2 run over the next 5:01 to pull away from Connecticut College and take a 54-40 lead. Mustafaj was key during the run, contributing six points.
  • With 7:55 remaining in the contest, a jumper from Dixon gave Middlebury its largest lead of the night at 15 (60-45). 
  • The Panthers did not let the Camels back within eight and were able to cruise to a 68-54 victory. 
NOTES
  • With 23 points in tonight's win, Mustafaj became just the fourth player in Middlebury history to score 500 points in a single season. She also brought her career total to 993, within seven points of eclipsing 1,000.
  • McDonald nailed three three-pointers in the win, giving her at least one triple made in 27 of the last 35 games. 
  • Messina registered a career-best 11 points and five steals during the contest.
  • The Panthers have emerged victorious in five of the last six games against Connecticut College.
