Women’s Basketball Drops Tightly-Contested Decision To SUNY New Paltz 54-51

The Middlebury women's basketball team concluded the Stevens Holiday Classic with a tightly-contested 54-51 setback to SUNY New Paltz on Saturday night.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the game on a 9-4 burst capped by a shot from beyond the arc by Alexa Mustafaj with 4:57 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Trailing by five (13-8), the Hawks cut the deficit to 13-11 on a three-pointer by Morgan Hammell as time expired in the opening frame. 
  • With 2:43 elapsed in the second stanza, Middlebury increased its lead to four (18-14) on a triple by Katie Hollensteiner
  • The Panthers continued to add to their advantage, taking a 23-16 edge on a pair of charity tosses by Augusta Dixon with 4:08 left in the half. 
  • New Paltz closed the half on a 7-0 run of its own. Brianna Fitzgerald tallied all seven points, sinking a jumper as the buzzer sounded to knot the score at 23-23 heading into the intermission. 
  • The Hawks jumped out to a 28-23 lead on a three-pointer by Fitzgerald with just over two minutes gone in the third frame. 
  • The Panthers responded with a 8-0 spurt of their own to grab a 31-28 edge with 2:58 to go. Bethany Lucey highlighted the spurt with a pair of layups.
  • New Paltz scored five of the next seven points to even the contest at 33 apiece heading into the final stanza.
  • Trailing 38-37, the Hawks rattled off 11 of the next 13 points to storm to an eight-point advantage (48-40) on a jumpshot by Fitzgerald with 4:11 remaining in the game. 
  • With 1:05 to go and New Paltz leading 52-46, Middlebury chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within one possession (53-51) on a jumper by Mustafaj with 17 seconds left. 
  • The Hawks converted on one free throw to take a 54-51 edge with 11 seconds remaining, and the Panthers were not able to tie the game as the multiple three-point attempts did not fall in the final ticks and New Paltz hung on for the 54-51 win.
NOTES
  • Dixon pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds during tonight's contest while also adding a career-high four blocks.
  • Lucey poured in a season-high 11 points in the game.
  • The programs met for the first time in women's basketball history.
