Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#3 Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss Of Season To #20 Tufts In NESCAC Semifinals

The #3/top-seeded Middlebury men's soccer team fell to #20/fourth-seeded Tufts 2-1 in NESCAC Semifinal action. The loss was the first for the Panthers this season, as the squad boasts an impressive 12-1-4 record.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Tufts took the lead after only 3:06 of action. A back-pass from the Middlebury defense took an unlucky bounce off the turf and skipped over the feet of Panther goalie Ryan Grady, slowly rolling into the net to give the Jumbos the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury looked to respond at the 12:31 mark. Following a scramble in the 18-yard box, Luke Madden volleyed a one-time effort just over the bar from 12 yards away.
  • Two minutes later, the Panthers nearly leveled the score. Jordan Saint-Louis whipped a corner kick into the box and Will Sawin fired a header on frame. Goalie Nikola Antic denied the bid and Ben Powers pounced on the rebound, but his close-range shot was denied.
  • The Panthers knotted the score with less than five minutes left in the opening half. Colin Dugan clipped a freekick into the 18 and Madden lept highest and knocked his header straight into the top-left corner to make it 1-1 at the halftime break.
  • Middlebury carried its momentum into the second half. The Panthers had a flurry of opportunities that were blocked by the Tufts' defense before Saint-Louis fired an effort from the top of the box that was saved by a diving Antic.
  • Tufts regained its one-goal advantage with 10 minutes elapsed in the second half. Daniel Yanez received a pass near the top of the box and curled a strike directly into the top-right corner for the 2-1 edge.
  • Middlebury looked to equalize at the 66:03 mark. Saint-Louis beat a defender and headed a shot from inside the six-yard box that looped just over the crossbar.
  • With 25 seconds remaining, Sawin blasted a rising drive that looked like it was destined for the far-right corner, but the ball whistled inches wide of the right post, as Tufts held on for the 2-1 win.
NOTES
  • The programs met for the 39th time with the Panthers holding a 35-30-10 edge. The teams have played nine times in the NESCAC Championship with Middlebury owning a 5-4-0 edge.
  • Madden's marker was his fourth of the season.
The Panthers wait to learn their fate in the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced on Monday afternoon.
