Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saint-Louis Sparks First Round Victory Over Western New England

Jordan Saint-Louis scored the opening two goals of the contest, as the third-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team kicked off its 2023 NCAA Tournament with a resounding 3-0 victory over Western New England (WNE).

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Both teams had great chances after 7:30 of action. Roger Leyland sprinted toward goal and fired a shot on frame, but Panther goalie Ryan Grady came up with the strong one-on-one save. Middlebury raced down the other end and nearly scored, as Will Sawin put his left-footed strike just wide of the far post.
  • The Panthers almost took the lead with 15 minutes elapsed. Kyle Nilsson dribbled past a defender and drove a low cross into the box which found Gavin Randolph, but his flicked effort rattled off the left post.
  • Middlebury jumped in front at the 17:36 mark. Saint-Louis controlled a looping ball in midfield and broke away down the right side. The forward raced past two defenders, before cutting inside and blasting a left-footed shot past Golden Bear goalie Braylon Casinghino that nestled into the top left corner for the 1-0 edge.
  • WNE nearly equalized with just over 15 minutes to play. Following a scramble in the box, Mike Milazzo headed a bid from six yards away that ricocheted off the right post and was cleared away.
  • The Panthers struck again only 2:40 into the second half. Harper Nicholl slipped a through ball to Saint-Louis who eased past the defense and knocked his left-footed strike into the bottom left corner to double the lead (2-0).
  • Just over a minute later, Middlebury narrowly missed out on a third goal. Colin Dugan brought the ball under control in the box and one-timed a right footed shot that rang the right post and was cleared away.
  • With just over 27 minutes to go, the Panthers extended their advantage to 3-0. Dugan was at the heart of the action again, as he flicked a through ball to Tyler Payne who squeezed his shot under the goalkeeper and into the net with his right foot.
  • Middlebury continued to look for another tally. In the 70th minute, Nicholl drew a strong save out of backup keeper Ryan Suprin, who tipped a curling bid that was destined for the upper-right corner over the crossbar.
  • The Panthers kept the pressure on, forcing the Golden Bears netminder into four great saves over the final 12 minutes, as they eased to the 3-0 triumph.
NOTES
  • With his 11th shutout of the season, Grady moves into third place in the Middlebury record books. He also registered his 40th career clean sheet, which is the most in school history.
  • Over the last 10 seasons, the program is 57-11-12 at home.
  • The programs met for just the third time and the first since 2003.
Middlebury returns to South Street Field on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when it faces Johns Hopkins for a spot in the NCAA Regional Round.
