The Middlebury volleyball team swept Manhattanville 3-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon. The triumph was head coach
Sarah Raunecker's 500th career win. With the victory, the Panthers advance to the regional semifinals on Friday, and will take on the winner of host #9 Johns Hopkins and Lasell who play later tonight.
HIGHLIGHTS
- A service ace by Gabbie O'Toole got the match going, as Middlebury jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, forcing the Valiants to take a timeout.
- Out of the break, Manhattanville slowly chipped away at the deficit, cutting the lead down to five (14-9) on a service ace from Vianca Vital.
- The Panthers responded with 11 of the next 13 points to ease to the 25-11 victory. The run was highlighted by a trio of kills from Molly Harrison, strong serving from Katie Kraczkowsky, and was capped by a pair of points from Lexi Linafelter.
- The second set was a back-and-forth affair early on, with neither team able to take a sizable lead. Tied at 6-6, Middlebury orchestrated a 7-2 burst to move out to a 13-8 edge.
- Following a Valiants' timeout, Manhattanville answered with a 4-0 spurt to cut the deficit to one (14-13).
- That was just the motivation the Panthers needed, rattling off eight of the next nine points to increase their advantage to 22-14.
- The Valiants wouldn't go away, slicing the lead to five (24-19), but a kill by Kraczkowsky secured the 25-19 triumph.
- Trailing 11-9 in the third stanza, Middlebury went on an 8-1 run capped by a kill from Stephanie Meyer for a 17-12 advantage.
- Manhattanville continued to bring the offensive pressure, cutting the deficit down to a pair of points on three occasions, before bringing it to within one (21-20).
- Behind strong serving from O'Toole, the Panthers rattled off the final four points for the 25-20 victory and the three-set sweep.
NOTES
- O'Toole had an excellent all-around match, recording 26 assists, 10 digs, three service aces and a trio of blocks.
- Ferrero led both teams, digging out 18 balls.
- Middlebury is making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
