Volleyball Splits Doubleheader With #19 MIT and Babson

The Middlebury volleyball team dropped a tight contest to #19 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), before bouncing back with a 3-1 victory over Babson to close out the New England Challenge.
 
HIGHLIGHTS VS. MIT
  • Trailing 9-7 in the first set, Middlebury went on a 4-0 run, capped by a service ace from Lillian Caldwell to take a 10-9 edge. 
  • The contest was tied three times before MIT took its largest lead of the day (22-19).
  • The Panthers stormed their way back, with four different players registering kills to knot the contest at 23 points apiece, but it wasn't enough. A pair of back-to-back Engineers' points secured the tight 25-23 win.
  • The early goings of the second stanza were close, with neither team able to take a sizeable advantage before a 6-2 MIT run gave the Engineers a 17-12 lead.
  • Middlebury hung around but was unable to make up the deficit as MIT secured the 25-20 victory.
  • The third set was tightly contested throughout. Trailing 18-17, the Engineers rattled off three-straight points to take a 20-18 edge.
  • The Panthers answered, taking advantage of an MIT service error, a kill by Katie Kraczkowsky and an ace by Ella Pate for a 21-20 lead.
  • The teams traded the next 10 points before the Engineers secured two-straight for the 27-25 win.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. BABSON
  • The Beavers jumped out to an 11-6 edge on a service ace from Olivia Leinenweber.
  • Babson continued to extend its advantage to 19-13 to force Middlebury into a timeout. 
  • The Panthers responded with a 5-1 run out of the break, capped by a kill from Ava Tuccio to pull to within two (20-18).
  • That was as close as Middlebury would get, as the Beavers closed the stanza on a 5-1 spurt of their own to win the opening frame 25-19.
  • The Panthers took control in the second set, taking a 10-3 lead on a kill by Lauren Baxter.
  • Middlebury maintained its lead,moving ahead by eight (16-8), highlighted by a pair of kills from Kraczkowsky.
  • From there, the Panthers rattled off an 8-0 run to win 25-11 and level the contest at 1-1.
  • Knotted at 6-6 in the third frame, Middlebury had a five-point burst capped by an ace from Caldwell to take an 11-6 lead.
  • The Panthers continued to pull away, claiming seven of the next nine rallies to double up the Beavers (18-9), and eventually pull away for the 25-16 triumph in the third set.
  • Middlebury carried its momentum into the fourth frame, riding an 8-0 spurt to jump out to a 10-3 lead on a kill by Molly Harrison. 
  • Trailing 12-5, Babson rattled off five unanswered points to move to within two (12-10).
  • The Panthers conjured up a 5-0 run of their own capped by an ace from Caldwell to take a 20-13 advantage and did not look back, winning the fourth stanza 25-17 to secure the four-set victory.
NOTES
  • Harrison posted a career-high 21 kills during the victory over Babson and has registered double-digit kills in 18 of 20 matches this year. 
  • Gabbie O'Toole recorded two service aces during the match against MIT, giving her 100 in her career.
  • Kraczkowsky matched her career-high in kills (15) in the win over the Beavers. 
  • Middlebury and the Engineers played for the 13th time, while the Panthers took on Babson for the ninth time.
Middlebury will return to NESCAC play next Friday when it hosts Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
