Women’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaking 3-2 Contest At Connecticut College

The Middlebury women's soccer team equalized twice, but it was not enough as the Panthers dropped a thrilling 3-2 contest at Connecticut College on Sunday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With less than five minutes played in the contest, Middlebury nearly took the lead. Olivia Irwin-Pokorny picked the ball up on the left side and blasted a shot from 25 yards that rattled the crossbar.
  • The Camels looked to strike first at the 24:55 mark. Jamie Scarpantonio brought the ball under control inside the box and fired a left-footed shot toward the bottom left corner, but Panther goalie Carolyn Kelley dove to smother the bid.
  • Connecticut College opened the scoring 33 seconds later. Mya Johnson ripped a low shot from the left edge of the box that nestled into the bottom-right frame for a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury responded on the ensuing kickoff, knotting the score at one apiece. Mia Feldman found space on the right flank and whipped in a cross to Gigi Day who clipped her close-range effort over Camel goalie Sarah Hall to level the score at 1-1.
  • With 7:02 remaining in the first half, Connecticut College restored its lead. Johnson tallied her second marker of the match with a scorching strike that went flying into the top right corner to make it 2-1 heading into the halftime break.
  • The Panthers looked to tie the game at the 58:47 mark. Abby Ward pounced on a loose ball in the offensive zone and blasted a volley on frame, but Hall sprung to her right to push the shot over the bar.
  • With 20:45 left in the game, Johnson nearly recorded her hat trick. Clare Mulvihill flicked a header toward the back post and Johnson looked to sweep the ball home, but Kelley soared across the goal to thwart the shot.
  • Middlebury found its equalizer with 9:49 remaining. Feldman picked up the ball on the left side of the 18 and bent a curling strike into the top-right corner to even the contest at 2-2.
  • Connecticut College stormed back into a 3-2 lead just 50 seconds later. Scarpantonio slipped a through ball to Lauren Anastos, who laced her effort across the goal and into the right frame to give the Camels the late lead.
  • The Panthers almost found the back of the net with 15 seconds left in the game. Day knocked a low cross to Joely Virzi in the six-yard box, but Virzi's close-range shot was cleared off the line by a Connecticut College defender, as the hosts hung on for the 3-2 win.
NOTES
  • Kelley made a season-high five saves during today's game.
  • Feldman's assist on the opening goal was her first of the season.
