#8 Men’s Basketball Slips Past Amherst 53-46

The eighth-ranked Middlebury men's basketball team earned its first NESCAC win of the season defeating Amherst 53-46.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers began the game by scoring eight of the first 10 points. Sam Stevens drained a three-pointer to give Middlebury an 8-2 edge with 4:15 elapsed.
  • Midway through the first half, Evan Flaks connected on a jump shot to stretch the Panther advantage to nine (17-8).
  • Amherst managed to cut the deficit to three (19-16) following a layup by Giovanni Tam with 5:31 remaining, but the Panthers closed the half on a 6-0 run, capped by a layup from David Brennan, to head into the locker room with a 25-16 advantage.
  • With 8:40 gone in the second half, a layup from Alex Sobel gave Middlebury a 10-point lead (37-27).
  • The Mammoths responded with a 7-2 run to close the gap to just five (39-34) with 9:22 left.
  • The Panthers answered with a 9-2 spurt of its own, as back-to-back jumpers from Jackson McKersie and Flaks pushed the lead to 12 (48-36) with 3:58 to go.
  • Middlebury was able to keep Amherst at bay and close out the 53-46 victory.
NOTES
  • Brennan tied his career high in rebounds during the win, pulling down 18 boards.
  • Stevens has connected on at least one three-pointer in 29 of 32 career games played.
  • Sobel registered three blocks in the victory, extending his streak of games with a blocked shot to 38 straight.
  • This was the 76th meeting between the teams as the Panthers have claimed the last two contests.
