Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#6 Women’s Hockey Falls to Connecticut College 2-1

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's hockey team knotted the contest 1-1 during the middle stanza, but could not hold off a strong Connecticut College, falling 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Camels nearly opened the scoring with 4:25 elapsed. Claire Matthews latched onto a pass just in front of the net and redirected a shot on frame. Panther netminder Sophia Will denied the bid and the follow-up effort from Kelly Matthews at the far post to keep the game scoreless.
  • At the 11:29 mark, Claudia Vira received the puck at the point and blasted a shot that looked destined for the upper corner, but goalie Abby Wieczorek pushed the shot aside. Connecticut College's defense held strong, blocking back-to-back shots from Maddie Bayard to kill off the penalty. 
  • With 20 seconds left in the period, Middlebury almost took the lead. Eva Hendrickson had an initial shot blocked, but the rebound fell to Britt Nawrocki, whose one-timer was pounced on by the Camel's netminder.
  • After just 3:20 in the second period, Connecticut College looked to get on the scoreboard. A bouncing puck dropped to Serena Seiple in the right circle, but her shot was thwarted by Will.
  • The Camels struck first at the 9:09 mark. Kiley Smith delivered a cross-ice pass to Seiple in the left circle, who blasted an effort into the upper left corner of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers equalized just two minutes later. Nawrocki skated in and fired a shot that was redirected into the path of Jenna Letterie on the doorstep. Letterie controlled the puck and slid it past Wieczorek to level the score at 1-1. 
  • Connecticut College regained its edge 1:12 later. Alana Burm took a slapshot from the point that looked to be saved by Will initially, but the 
  • At the 17:43 mark, the Camels nearly took a two-goal edge. Kiley Smith cut to her backhand and flicked a shot on net, but Will made a diving save to keep the difference at one..
  • With 5:39 elapsed in the final stanza, Connecticut College seemed to have taken a 3-1 lead. Following a scramble in front of the net, #11 wristed a shot into the far corner, but the goal was called off for a foul before the shot, keeping the score 2-1. 
  • Middlebury almost tied the game at the 11:53 mark. Following a shot from the point, Grace Devries nearly shoveled the rebound into the net, but Wieczorek was able to fall on the puck to preserve the Camels' 2-1 lead.
  • The Panthers applied the pressure within the final minute of play, as Zoe Pincelli and Vira both had chances to score, but the Connecticut College goaltender was able to deny the late efforts to secure the 2-1 win. 
NOTES
  • With her goal today, Letterie has recorded at least one point in nine games this season.
