Big Third Period Lifts Middlebury Past Connecticut College 5-1

The Middlebury men's hockey team scored three goals in the final 4:41 of action against Connecticut College, pulling away for a 5-1 victory Friday in Kenyon Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers had a great chance to score 2:45 into a fast-moving first period. Following a faceoff win in the offensive zone, a rising shot by Nolan Moore from the blueline was saved by Camel netminder Cam Fernandez.
  • Middlebury had a quality opportunity following a Connecticut College turnover at the midway point of the period. Michael Fairfax skated onto the puck, but his shot from between the circles was turned away by Fernandez's right pad.
  • The Panthers got on the scoreboard at the 12:11 mark. Jin Lee entered the zone with a head of steam, as his initial shot from the doorstep was saved by Fernandez. The rebound came to the right side where Wyatt Pastor laced a shot from his knees just under the crossbar for the 1-0 edge.
  • Connecticut College had its best chance to get on the board with six minutes left, as Brett Moccia's turnaround shot from the slot was saved by Middlebury goalie Jake Horoho.
  • Middlebury nearly increased its lead with 10:19 elapsed in the second period, but a wrister by Lee from the right dot was saved by Fernandez.
  • The Camels turned up their offensive pressure over the remainder of the stanza. Horoho denied three bids from point-blank range just over 11 minutes in, making a pair of stops while sprawling out.
  • The visitors continued to pepper Horoho, as the Panther netminder made a dazzling save with his glove on a shot by Jack Luca at the 13:10 mark.
  • Connecticut College fired five shots at Horoho in the final 38 seconds of the frame, but Horoho saved each attempt to keep Middlebury's 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury doubled its lead with 7:22 expired in the third period when Zach Whitehead tapped in the loose puck on the left side.
  • The Camels sliced the deficit in half (2-1) with a power-play goal at 10:15. Moccia gathered the loose puck and shoveled it into the back of the net to draw within one.
  • The Panthers nearly regained a two-goal advantage less than two minutes later, but Ryan Pineault's shot from the blueline pinged off the crossbar.
  • Connecticut College had a good chance to tie the contest, but a lofted knuckling shot from Steven Ardagna was smothered by Horoho.
  • Middlebury took a 3-1 advantage at 15:19 when Cole Joslin tapped in a rebound while on the power play.
  • The Panthers added an empty-net goal by Garbe at the 18:47 mark and a score 17 seconds later by Whitehead for the final 5-1 tally.
