The #6 Middlebury women's ice hockey team topped Bowdoin 3-1 to sweep the weekend series in front of dozens of alumnae in Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.
Caroline Cutter tallied a pair of goals, while netminder
Sophia Will stopped 20 shots to secure the victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers looked to open the scoring with 6:43 expired in the first period. Cutter's hard shot was too much for Polar Bear goalie Danielle Marquez to hang on to, but the puck felljust in front of the goal line and a Bowdoin defender cleared it out of danger.
- With roughly seven minutes left in the stanza, Middlebury threatened to score again. Britt Nawrocki chipped the puck over a pair of blueliners, sending Jenna Letterie on a breakaway. Marquez came out charging and poked the puck away with her stick to deny a chance.
- With 4:35 elapsed in the middle frame, the Panthers took a 1-0 edge. Marquez starfished and tipped a loose puck away from the crease, but Cutter was there to one-time the puck into the nylon for the one-goal lead.
- Bowdoin answered just over four minutes later when Brett Stoddard went bar-down during a power play, knotting the contest 1-1.
- Middlebury had exciting back-to-back bids just over midway through the period, but Letterie's shot hit the left pipe and Claudia Vira pinged her effort off the right post.
- With 1:23 left in the session, the Panthers took the lead for good. Jordan Hower tied up the puck along the boards after a failed clearing attempt by the Polar Bears. Hower slid the puck to Ashley McDonald behind the goal, who found Nawrocki in the slot for a one-time tally and the 2-1 advantage.
- With 9:22 expired in the final stanza, Bowdoin had its best chance to score the equalizer. Anyi Sun picked the pocket of the Middlebury blueliner and fired a shot on goal, but Will sprawled out to thwart the chance and preserve the lead.
- The Panthers secured the victory with 3:04 left in the game. An initial shot by Cece Ziegler went just wide, but banked off of the boards behind the goal and perfectly squirted out to Cutter who was on the pipe to poke it home for the 3-1 triumph.
