Big Second Period Lifts Men’s Hockey Past Bowdoin 3-2

The Middlebury men's hockey team scored three times in Saturday's second period and held off a late charge by Bowdoin for a 3-2 victory. The Panthers tallied two goals on a five-minute power-play opportunity in the decisive period.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury had a quality chance to score just 1:14 into the first period, but Andrej Hromic lost his edge while making a move and Bowdoin goalie Alex Kozic denied his bid with the right pad.
  • The Polar Bears struck with 4:37 expired during a power play. Andy Stoneman poked in the loose puck following a scramble in front for the 1-0 edge.
  • Bowdoin looked to double its lead near the midway point of the period, but Panther netminder Jake Horoho thwarted back-to-back shots from Patrick Callahan on the doorstep.
  • The visitors produced a good scoring opportunity with 14:46 expired as Cole Joslin picked off a clearing attempt and skated in on Kozic. The Polar Bear goalie forced Joslin to skate wide and Joslin's shot hit the right pipe, as Bowdoin held onto its 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
  • Middlebury tied the score (1-1) just seconds after a five-minute power play expired at the 9:45 mark. Billy Dobensky laced a shot from the blueline that Zach Whitehead redirected up and over Kozic.
  • Bowdoin was again whistled for a five-minute non-releasable major and the Panthers took advantage. Paddy Bogart was the recipient of a nifty tic-tac-toe passing sequence, one-timing the puck from the right slot at 13:58.
  • Just over two minutes later, Hromic ripped a shot from the right dot that found space over the shoulder of Kozic for a 3-1 lead.
  • The Polar Bears had a great chance to score with a minute left when Stoneman was denied by a sprawling Horoho to preserve the two-goal lead.
  • Bowdoin cut the deficit to one (3-2) at the 10:36 mark of the third period. After cycling the puck around the zone, Stoneman blasted a shot from the point that was tipped in by Studley.
  • Following a Polar Bear giveaway with just over 13 minutes elapsed, Middlebury's Chris Garbe skated into the zone and his shot from the right side was stoned by Kozic pushing to his right.
  • Bowdoin pulled Kozic with 3:26 remaining in favor of the extra skater. Back-to-back bids by Lyons and Callahan were saved by Horoho from point-blank range.
  • The Polar Bears continued to pepper Horoho with shots looking for the equalizer, but Horoho and the Panther defense held strong, securing the 3-2 victory.
 NOTES
  • Whitehead's goal was the first of his career, while adding an assist on Hromic's game-winning score.
  • Horoho finished with 27 saves, including five over the final 3:34 to preserve the win.
  • Dobensky's assist was his team-leading eighth of the season.
  • Middlebury and Bowdoin played for the 93rd time with the Polar Bears holding a 42-41-10 edge.
