Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

#11 Men’s Basketball Knocks Off #6 Williams

The 11th-ranked Middlebury men's basketball team knocked off #6 Williams 60-55. The Panthers never trailed during the second half, but held off a pair of comeback bids by the Ephs to secure their second-straight victory over a top-10 program.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jaden Bobbett got things going for Middlebury, sinking a shot from beyond the arc at the 17:58 mark. David Brennan converted a pair of free throws shortly after, giving the Panthers an early 5-0 edge.
  • Williams chipped away at the deficit, taking its only lead of the contest (10-9) on a layup from Nate Karren midway through the stanza.
  • The Panthers responded with 11 unanswered points, taking a 20-10 lead at the 4:13 mark.
  • The Ephs cut the advantage down to nine points on two occasions, but a layup from Alex Sobel with 20 ticks left on the clock gave Middlebury a 24-13 lead heading into the break.
  • Williams opened the second half with an 11-3 run, highlighted by five points from Spencer Spivy. The Ephs cut the deficit to just three (27-24) with 15:47 on the clock, but that was as close as they would get for the rest of the game.
  • Middlebury slowly extended its lead back out to double digits, taking a 49-39 advantage on a layup from Brennan with 6:12 to go.
  • A pair of charity tosses by Nash Goldman with less than two minutes remaining gave the Panthers a 53-41 cushion.
  • The Ephs wouldn't go away, rattling off a late 7-2 run to cut the lead down to five points (55-50) with just under a minute left on the clock.
  • Despite a pair of converted free throws by Noah Osher with 53 seconds remaining, Williams continued to press. A layup and a three-pointer by Cole Prowitt-Smith sandwiched around a charity toss by Sobel put the game within reach for the Ephs (58-55) with just 14 ticks left, but it wasn't enough.
  • Sam Stevens knocked down both free throws in the waning seconds and grabbed a rebound on a last-second missed three to secure the 60-55 win.
NOTES
  • Sobel tallied his 33rd career double-double during the victory. His 18 points give him 1,067 in his career, moving him into a tie for 18th place on the all-time list. With 13 boards, Sobel is now ranked fifth on the Middlebury career list with 711.
  • Goldman followed up his career-best performance from a week ago, tallying 10 points in today's triumph.
