Header Goal By Sophia Cole Powers #23 Panthers Past Beacons

The #23 Middlebury women's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 victory over UMass.-Boston. The Panthers were powered by Sophia Cole's first career goal.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury got on the scoreboard just 7:53 into the contest. Emma Binks sent a cross from the right corner that Cole redirected with her head into the back of the net for the 1-0 edge.
  • Sarah Guest threatened to double the Panther lead with 22:04 expired, but Beacon goalie Isabella O'Connell denied the upper-left corner attempt.
  • In the second half, Cole had a pair of quality bids. The first came during the 68th minute with a blast from 15 yards out, but O'Connell thwarted the chance. With 70:52 showing on the scoreboard, Cole ripped a shot that just hit the crossbar and ricocheted out of bounds.
  • UMass.-Boston had a chance to tie the game with its only shot on goal with just under five minute remaining. Dani Anderson sent the ball toward the upper-right 90, but Middlebury goalkeeper Sydney Poppinga denied the chance to preserve the 1-0 shutout.
NOTES
  • Poppinga made the only save of the contest for the Panthers, with Lucy VanNewkirk opening the first half in goal.
  • The assist was the first career point tallied for Binks.
  • The victory marks the eighth-straight season-opening win for Middlebury.
  • With the loss, the Beacons fall to 0-2-1.
