Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#23 Women’s Soccer Comes Up Just Short At #18 Amherst

The 23rd-ranked Middlebury women's soccer scored saw its comeback attempt fall just short at #18 Amherst. The Panthers scored three times in the second half, cutting the deficit to one (4-3), but the Mammoths were able to run the clock down and hang on for the narrow victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury had a good chance to get on the board with 11:55 expired when Sophia Cole redirected a cross by Ellie Bavier, but Cole's header went just wide left.
  • Amherst opened the scoring at the 23:47 mark. Alexa Juarez received a throw-in near the right corner flag and chipped the ball into the box, before Abby Schwartz volleyed the ball into the bottom-left corner for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Mammoths doubled their lead during the 29th minute. Panther goalie Carolyn Kelley made a diving save to deny a free kick by Alyssa Huynh, but Liza Katz was right there to blast the rebound into the upper-right 90 for the 2-0 advantage.
  • Middlebury controlled play in the opening minutes of the second half, before mounting an impressive comeback attempt.
  • The Panthers got on the board with 51:58 elapsed when Joely Virzi intercepted an Amherst pass, beat a defender before burying the ball in the bottom-left corner to make it 2-1.
  • The Mammoths wouldn't go away, tallying a pair of quick goals. Isabel Stern took advantage of a collision between a Middlebury and Amherst player. Stern dribbled around the commotion before finding the back of the net. Just shy of two minutes later, Stern set up a nice give-and-go with Ally Deegan during a two-on-one situation, making it 4-1.
  • During the 82nd minute, Middlebury's Carolina Espinosa had the ball at the top of the 18 and passed it backwards to Maddie Schin who one-timed the ball into the top-left corner for her first career goal.
  • The Panthers cut the deficit to one (4-3) with just under five minutes remaining. Kiley Bertos took a free kick outside the 18 on the right side. Roshann Purcell went up to head the ball with an Amherst player and just flicked it into the back of the net.
  • Middlebury put the pressure on in the offense zone in the final minutes, but a strong Amherst defense secured the 4-3 Mammoth win.

NOTES

  • Kelley earned her first career start in goal.
  • Purcell's goal was the first in her career, while Bertos' assist was her first point as a Panther.
