Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#17 Women’s Soccer Blanks Bates

The 17th-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team scored once in each half, easing to a 2-0 victory to wrap up its NESCAC weekend in Maine.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers applied early pressure and looked to get on the scoreboard in the first minute, but a header by Margaret Furman was corralled on the near post by Bobcat goalie Samantha Bunar.
  • Bates had its only chance of the opening half on a set piece in the 39th minute when a left-footed volley by Gabby Hill-Junke sailed high over the crossbar.
  • The Panthers broke into the scoring column with 1:59 remaining before the halftime break. Fanny Lodge sent a cross from the right side that was lifted toward the far post. Cate Woolsey won the battle against her Bobcat defender, heading the ball inside the right post past a diving Lunar for the 1-0 lead at the half.
  • Five minutes into the second frame, Middlebury's Abby Ward had a low shot from the right side that was denied on the goal line by a defender.
  • Ward used that momentum and gave the Panthers a two-goal advantage moments later. Ella Gagnon headed a loose ball inside the box to the right side toward Ward, who collected it and sent a left-footed blast inside the left post at the 51:46 mark.
  • In the 65th minute, the Bobcats best opportunity came when Hill-Junke sent a knuckling shot from the left wing that Panther goalie Lucy VanNewkirk smothered while going to the ground.
  • Joely Virzi produced a great chance to increase the lead in the 72nd minute on the run, but her rising shot was punched over the crossbar by a charging Bunar who raced off her goal line to cut down the angle.
  • The Panthers maintained most of the possession in their offensive zone over the final minutes, easing to the 2-0 victory.

NOTES
  • Ward's goal was the first of her career.
  • Middlebury improves to 27-14-2 against the Bobcats, winning the last six matchups and outscoring Bates 20-1 in those triumphs.
  • Gagnon's assist was her team-leading third of the season.
  • VanNewkirk's shutout was the first clean sheet this fall and the fourth of her career.
